Can I install coat hooks on drywall without using a stud?

The screw with expansion toggle will work, but only for limited weight bearing. First time someone hangs not only a coat but pulls down on the hook you attach to the toggle molly, you could get a pull through. One method is to expand the area meant to hold the hooks.

This means buying an already routed board, whatever dimension you want (24", 36" 1X4 or so), finish it if not already finished, and mount it using three toggles equidistant, one on each end and one in middle. This will disperse the weight and use more of the drywall for support.

You can even mount the board, then use screw hooks into the board for your hangerss. The screw hooks then anchor to wood instead of drywall, while the wood spreads the weight bearing.

yes but you would want to consider using self-anchoring screws.
Reply:I do a lot of work at construction sites and see a lot of Studs who can't do a thing. You can try using a pretty young thing as long as she doesn't use too many hangers and the coats and jackets aren't too heavy.
Reply:You can but before too long it will rip out of the wall. Find a stud.
Reply:Use a toggle bolt to attach the hanger, When a toggle bolt is used sheet rock will carry quit a bit of weight as log as you arent trying to swing from it or anything like that
Reply:you can try using drywall mollies, but eventually they will pull away. coats are too heavy to hang from drywall
