When a dealership hooks up their computer to your car to find out the mechanical problem...?

does it tell everything that is wrong with the car, or tell one thing wrong, then when that thing is fixed, tell more that is wrong. In other words does it tell all at once or step by step?

When a dealership hooks up their computer to your car to find out the mechanical problem...?
Computer diagnostics only tell you electrical, fuel, air, and sensor problems-most common.A computer usually won't tell you what a mechanical problem is-that takes the mechanics experience.
Reply:New car computers are very sophisticated. They can tell several problems at once. It can also tell how fast you accelerate, how many times you red line and so on.
Reply:Sorry, their is no magic computer that can tell what is wrong with a car. It's up to a qualified mechanic to diagnose the problem. A scan tool only aids the technician in finding out what exactly is wrong with your car.
Reply:The computer diagnostic machine tells them everything that is wrong with it mechanically that is. Its up to the technician to be right on the diagnostic side of his assesment. Say the computer tells him one of you spark plugs isn't firing, of course 1st things 1st, check the plug wires, distributor cap for connections (not corroding) etc........ If you know some one thats pretty good with cars and have a laptop you can always buy the connection for your car to laptop and buy the software disk and do-it-yourself instead of paying some of the silly fees they charge.
Reply:The older scanners only picked up 1 fault. You would then have to replace that item and then re-scan.

The newer scanners have a system where you can quarantine a fault and re-scan , thus enabling you to get a list of all faulty items.

It is common for more than one item to fail at the same time.

The scanner tool is not magic and is only as good as the technician using it.
