Working on a Motown unit with students, and I want to show them some examples of songs used in current or pretty recent music. Suggestions welcome!
MOTOWN samples, remakes, hooks, etc.... in popular music?
There are thousands of direct cover versions, but these are samples in other songs:
Sean Kingston used "Stand By Me" by Ben E King. It was on his song "Beautiful Girls".
"Crazy in Love" by Beyoncé uses the hook from The Chi-Lites' 1970 hit "Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)".
"I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 (a Motown hit in 1969) was sampled by Kris Kross ("Jump", 1992), Tamia ("Imagination, 1998), Jay-Z ("Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", 2001), and Lil Romeo ("My Baby", 2001).
"Can You Feel It" by The Jacksons was sampled by The Tamperer %26amp; Maya in "Feel It".
"It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers was used by Salt 'N' Pepa for "Shake Your Thang".
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell was reworked by Amy Winehouse in "Tears Dry On Their Own".
"Pastime Paradise' by Stevie Wonder = "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio.
"Uptight (Everything's Alright)" by Stevie Wonder was sampled by Kid 'N Play in his song "Hype".
Another Wonder song - "Superstition" was remixed by Alicia Keys in the song "Karma (Karmastition Remix)".
Will Smith also used Stevie's "I Wish" as the basis for the theme song for the movie, Wild Wild West.
They are not Motown, but Parliament must be the most sampled group of all time - "Flashlight" is all over hip-hop records. And James Brown's back catalogue has been raided very often too.
Reply:Jay-Z's song "Never Change" (blueprint album) was sampled from David Ruffin's Common Man.
Mo Money, Mo Problems (The Notorious B.I.G.) is sampled from Diana Ross I'm Coming Out
If by Janet Jackson is sampled from Diana Ross and the Supremes "Someday We'll Be Together"
Because of Love by Janet Jackson (Janet Album) is sampled from Diana Ross and The Supremes "Love Child"
The new song by Jennifer Lopez Do It Well is sampled from Eddie Kendricks "Keep on Truckin"
Black Eyed Peas sampled Get Ready by the Temptations
"Busta Rhymes song In The Ghetto" is sampled from Rick James Ghetto Life
"You Cant Touch This by MC Hammer" is sampled from Rick James Superfreak
that's all I can come up with right now
