What types of hooks and what sizes are good on catfish.?
That depends on the bait you use. Dips and baits of that nature require treble hooks. For me that's okay but messy. I prefer to use "j" hooks in the 2/0 -3/0 size. Circle hooks in the same size work great as well and no need to set the hook.
Reply:trebble hook. you can use a regular hook for cats but the trebble is the best bait. cats are not very fast striking fish so they high eat the bait off a regular hook the trebble will give you more of a chance in getting that cat in a lip. and the trebble holds the bait better. it is easier to pack dough or chicken liver onto the trebble than a regular no 2 no 3 or what ver hook. yea, use a trebble hook. that is the best rought
Reply:Octopus or Circle hooks ( pretty much the same thing ) work really well.
Reply:My personal preference is circle hooks in size 1/0 or 2/0, or even larger if the catfish get bigger. The shorter hook shank makes these hooks very strong an harder to break. I learned this lesson the hard way by having 20+ pound channel cats snap the shanks on standard Snell or "J" hooks. Good luck! I hope you catch a BIG one!
Reply:A good catfish hook would be a 1/0, 2/0 or 3/0 Octopus. It's a very strong hook and shouldn't break under normal circumstances. I use the with my live baits and cut baits, when fishing for catfish. I am catching flatheads in the 35-40 lb range with these hooks. If I have a larger bait fish I'll use a 2/0 Kahle hook. They are curved a little more and allow you to hook the bait fish better, without killing it.
