Is it possible to fish without barbed hooks? How is it done?

Yup', it can be done ;). Reside in CA. : ( and a good amount of the rivers in this state are Barbless. A very simple rule of thumb when usin' this type hook ~ "tip up and tight lines" eg., when fish is hung keep the tip of your rod up ("tip up"), which in turn helps keep tension on the line itself ("tight lines"). Tension on line is one of the key factors along with the initial, "good setting of the hook"...

Lot of fellas that I know will purchase Barbless hooks, I'll just simply use pliers to crimp (flatten) barb down but, there are tools on the market that are specifically designed to do this. When using a file, one runs inta' the problem of the file accidentally hitting and damaging the sharpness of the hook point, however goin' with a "Rat Tail" file instead of a flat type may help eliminate this. Do not mean to contradict anyone because every angler has his/hers own methods ;)...

Yes! barbless hooks, they make unhooking easier, to keep the fish on the line though you have to keep tension on it to prevent it from slipping off. Many new flies use them so to make catch and release easier, some are shaped different to ordinary hooks to help keep the fish on.
Reply:In my sons private lake he has a "catch and release" or no fishing. Works fine If you mark a fish by some natural marking on it, it will come back within minutes so, I'd gather they're not harmed and, don't remember biting or, being hurt.
Reply:Most UK coarse waters only permit barbless hooks.

Easier un hooking and better for the fish.
Reply:just crimp the the barb and it will break and you will have barbless hooks, basspro sells a little tool that resembles a pair of pliers and they just crush the barb
Reply:they call it barbless, all that means is the tip of the hook is not sharp
Reply:Yes,as a matter of fact there are some places I fish that are restricted to barb less hooks only. And you fish the same way you fish with barbs !
Reply:Yes........file them off, although it may be a little more difficult when setting the hook. I always catch and release and prefer to not damage the fish at all. I just love the sport of fishing! I hate treble hooks as these are very difficult to get off the fish, especially if it takes all 3 of them and that's nine hooks to mess with.
Reply:barbless hooks are required in many fishing areas,,,if you allow any slack in the line while fighting the fish, the fish will throw the hook,, a good trick is to dip the hook in saltwater and let it rust up a bit, the extra friction from the rust will help keep it from being thrown by the fish,,,,

you can fish a barbless hook just like a barbed hook, the trick is in fighting the fish,,,
Reply:Yes. Pinch the barbs with a pliers.
