What polymer is needed to make velcro hooks and loops?

Velcro uses nylon for their hooks while the loops are woven. From their web site:

VELCRO® brand nylon fasteners consist of two mating components: hook and loop. The woven hook tape consists of minute, flexible "hooks" which engage with a mating loop tape comprised of small, soft "loops." When pressed together, the resulting closure is adjustable, highly secure and jam proof. To reopen (cycle), the closure is simply peeled apart. VELCRO® brand woven hook and loop tapes are manufactured by a precise and refined weaving process which ensures uniformity of dimensions and construction.

3M produces reclosable fasteners in 2 product lines, Scotchmate which is similar to Velcro and Dual Lock which is more along the lines of a hook-hook system. Scotchmate uses nylon for the hooks, Dual Lock is molded from a polyolefin.

You can find a lot of information on the 3M web site, and Velcro should be able to send you useful brochures if you use their links for requesting more information.
