What is the most effective way to attach hooks/weight to your fishing line for trout fishing?

I tend to fish for trout in streams and moving water, and prefer to use small spinners and lures. When I rig up for bait I like to use the red Gamakatsu egg hooks for Salmon eggs and either size12 or 14, depending on the size of the eggs. For other baits such a worm a size 8-10 bait holder usually works well, again try to match the hook to the bait. Use a split shot, pinched on about 12-18" above the hook.

If I am fishing in still water I rig with a sliding egg sinker, but I have been using a Carolina Keeper between the sinker and the hook. This device is nothing more than a round piece of plastic, with a small slit in the center. You squeeze it and it opens to allow you to put the line through, then closes down on the line to hold and keep the sinker where you want it. The advantage of this is that there is no additional weight, it is adjustable without having to tie on another leader to change depth, does not seem to get hung up as much, and you only have one knot instead of three. I don't like to use leaders so this works very well for me. I don't recommend this when using sinkers over 1/2 oz, then it's best use the swivel and a leader as suggested, as the heavier weights will cause the keeper to move.

As to the question of knots use which ever one you can tie the best and are comfortable with. The two knots that you should learn are the Improved clinch, and the Palomar. My personal favorite for this type of fishing with light line is the clinch. First knot I learned. I do like the Palomar for heavier lines, say 20#+. The line I normally use is 4# Green Maxima, again just a personal preference They also make this in a 3# and 5#, the 3# is really nice to use. (Not trying to start a line war) Hope this helps.

try Youtube video's type in....." improved clinch knot" you can also try the palomar knot ....while your there check out the other fishing video's
Reply:Theres lots of knots that you can use to tie on hooks and weights that will work equally well for both, there is no need for different knots for each try any of these

Reply:i use the palomar knot with 4 pound test, ultra green maxima. I mainly use 1/32 ounce mini jigs (white, green, pink, yellow), and power worm trailers( bubble gum, cheese, worm color).
Reply:This is how we do it around here for fishing the river.

Use about a two inch piece of surgical tubing and stick a piece of about 3/16" diameter solid core lead wire in it. Cut the lead whatever length you want. The longer the heavier.

The lead and the surgical tubing is sold at all the sporting goods stores around here (Pacific NW) because it's so popular.

Now, when you get hung-up in the rocks on the bottom of the river, you will loose only the lead. The rest of your rig will still be attached.

Oh, we attach the surgical tubing by poking a snap swivel through it, and I usually attach my leader right there too.

You'll never see us use split shot or frankly, anything else. If we see someone using a slip sinker we know they're probably from out of State....here on vacation.
Reply:Split shot or slider/egg weight, main line tied to a swivel (ball bearing type the best ~ 2nd link) w/ 18" leader usin' #'s 8 or 10 size hooks. Link below be for re-usable split shot and sliders (these be steel type). The re-usable split shot can be removed without re-riggin' and slider type allows line to run through it, so fish cannot feel the weight itself.

Ball bearing swivel (Sapro be bout' the best):

As for tyin' hooks and swivels, one can go either with a Palomar or Improved Clinch knot (I prefer the Palomar). Link is a good one, all knots are shown in animation form for easier tyin' and also has knots for other uses. Hope I've helped somewhat, but if not there will be other Answers ppl that can probably run it down to ya' a little better ;)...

Note: I'll put a red bead between swivel and slider weight for a ball-bearing effect.
